Merriam-Webster, a leading dictionary publication since 1828, said feminism was chosen based on a "quantitative measure of interest".

This is due to the fact many high-profile world events this year have focused on women's rights and gender equality, from the Women's Marches that took place around the globe at the start of 2017, to the USA presidential campaign between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton to the recent #MeToo campaign in which women shared their accounts of sexual assault and harassment.
