NY state had a slight population increase, adding 13,113 new residents, which is about how many people live in Schodack, to reach 19,849,399, according to U.S. Census Bureau's latest state and national population estimates released Wednesday.

That's roughly double the net migration figure from the previous year, which was -4,000.

These most recent population estimates are available only for individual states and the U.S.as a whole.

Overall, the USA population grew by 0.7 percent from July 1, 2016, to July 1, 2017 - to 325.7 million people. Trailing Idaho in percentage population growth were Nevada (2 percent growth); Utah (1.9 percent); Washington (1.7 percent); Arizona (1.6 percent); and Texas, Washington, D.C., Colorado and OR (1.4 percent each).

Overall payroll employment during the period shrunk by 3,600 people, or 1.3 percent, which was the worst in the nation. Only West Virginia has seen more consecutive years of population decline, with five.

Rural counties and most downstate metro areas saw the most dramatic declines.

The state's rate of growth past year outpaced the nation, which grew.72 percent to 325.7 million.

The U.S. territory of Puerto Rico also took a hit in population numbers. However, in the past year, the net number of individuals moving between Kentucky and other US states was positive, albeit small. Net global migration decreased 1.8 percent between 2016 and 2017, making it the first drop since 2012-2013. That puts it at a record above 12.8 million people.

On the bright side, IL has seen an increased racial, ethnic and gender diversity in the state's work-aged population.
