U.S. giant Google announced Tuesday the opening of almost half a dozen data centers and the installation of three new submarine cables in 2018 and 2019, to strengthen its cloud computing infrastructure. The Google Cloud Platform (GCP) region, which is now live in the country, will encourage more local firms to adopt Cloud. The company estimates that its network now accounts for 25% of all internet traffic. "Companies like PayPal leverage our network and infrastructure to run their businesses effectively", Ben Treynor Sloss, vice president of Google's cloud platform, said in a blog post. It now has 15 regions made up of 44 zones.

The Curie Cable will connect Chile to Los Angeles and is being build as a private cable by Google. Google recommends customers deploy applications across multiple zones and regions to help protect against unexpected failures.

Laying groundwork for the infrastructure fights of the coming decades, Google has announced that it will be building three underwater cables across the ocean floor in efforts to improve its cloud capabilities. "From datacentres to subsea cables, Google is committed to connecting the world and serving our cloud customers", he said.

In all, Google points out that it now has "direct investment" in 11 undersea cables, which seems like a necessary move when you consider that Google's network is providing as much as 25% of global internet traffic. The third line will go from Hong Kong to Guam.

One of the cables will be entirely Google owned and will connect Los Angeles to Chile. The first of the three submarine sea cables will run from Los Angeles, CA to Chile.

As the sole owner, Google will have complete control over Curie's design and construction. And once deployed, Google will be in a better position to make routing decisions based on latency and availability.

Google said in 2019 it will be involved with the commissioning of three sub-sea cables: Curie, a private cable connecting Chile to Los Angeles; Havfrue, a consortium cable connecting the USA to Denmark and Ireland; and the Hong Kong-Guam Cable, connecting major subsea communication hubs in Asia.

The conglomerate has tapped undersea communications system supplier TE Connectivity to construct the cable.

Google isn't the only company making this kind of investment in infrastructure.
