"This is real filth, this is the honourless stance that should be said "no" to", Erdogan said. The US has mostly just ignored those warnings. However, the U.N. Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura was expected to take part in the Sochi conference, though he hadn't shown up in the conference room Tuesday as the gathering started.

Afrin, a remote area in northern Syria, was a very popular geotag for Instagram posts shared by Turkish troops.

Turkey began its offensive to expel the People's Protection Units (YPG) from a northwestern enclave in Syria on January 20 as it launched artillery and air strikes on positions in Afrin in a campaign labeled "Operation Olive Branch".

The Turkish assault on Afrin has exposed the ambivalence of the relationship between the Kurds and Assad, who does not see the minority as a direct threat but resents their emancipation.

The Turkish operation aims to oust from Afrin a militia made up of an estimated 8,000 to 10,000 fighters affiliated with the People's Protection Units or YPG, a Syrian Kurdish group that has controlled territory in northern Syria and proven effective in fighting the Islamic State group. It says prosecutors issued warrants for 11 members of the association.

Turkey, which considers the YPG to be a terrorist organisation, has called on Washington to end its military support for the group and to pull back from the Manbij region where some of its troops are stationed.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has accused the association of betrayal and its members of being "terrorist lovers" after the organization warned of the humanitarian costs of Ankara's operation into the Syrian Kurdish enclave of Afrin, launched on January 20.

The Paris-based media watchdog Reporters Without Borders has slammed the detentions as the Turkish government's "witch hunt against critics".

The Kurdistan Region's Parliament on Tuesday condemned the Turkish military operation in the Syrian Kurdistan (Rojava) city of Afrin, calling on the United Nations and the worldwide community to stop the attacks.
