"Heartbroken to report Deputy Daniel McCartney, #484, lost his life overnight while courageously protecting citizens of Pierce Co.", Pierce County Sheriff's Office tweeted.

A Pierce County Sheriff Department deputy died early Monday morning after being shot by an apparent burglar he was trying to catch in the Frederickson area. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and a married father of three sons.

After arriving at the scene, McCartney chased an unidentified black male on foot before the suspect shot him and escaped.

Authorities launched a dragnet after a Washington state sheriff's deputy was shot and killed while chasing a pair of suspected burglars late Sunday, police said. He leaves behind a wife and three young boys, who are four, six, and nine years old.

A police spokesman said the police authorities believed there was a gunbattle between McCartney and the home intruders during the fatal encounter.

The suspect, who authorities described as armed and unsafe, was the subject of manhunt by K9 units in the area of 200th Sreet as the suspect is being actively searched for by K9 units. A large containment area around the shooting scene was blocked off for several hours while authorities searched for a second suspect.

Deputies are doing a K-9 track in the area and have closed Canyon Road at 176th Street South all the way to the end of the road. Some clothing was found by deputies that they believe he left behind.

Bethel School District canceled all classes for Monday out of "an abundance of caution", it reported on its Facebook page.
