Mr. Lavasa, due to demit office in October 2022, will be the Chief Election Commissioner after Mr. Arora.

During his tenure as Election Commissioner, Assembly elections in Bihar, Assam, West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Manipur, Goa, Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat were conducted successfully. He had also done the postgraduation in Social Development planning from the United Kingdom in 1989.

He said the Election Commission had stopped seeding of voter identity cards with Aadhaar following a Supreme Court directive.
