"To be out there on the MCG, win the game and make a score like that is incredibly special", he said.

Roy surpassed teammate Alex Hales's previous ODI best of 171 during his 151-ball knock as England cruised home with seven balls to spare in a morale-boosting victory, after a demoralising 4-0 loss in the Ashes Tests.

"It kind of gave me a bit of a kick to recognise where I'm at, where my preparation is and start building up a platform to get ready for internationals. There is a long way to go but it is a great way to start".

Australia included Adam Zampa's leg spin and also the West Australian AJ Tye for his maiden ODI appearance, with Cameron White and Jhye Richardson left to await opportunities at a later point in the series. "Some innings you hit them straight to fielders, some innings you don't".

Though they ended up needing to chase more runs than had ever been successfully run down in a match at the MCG, England were given a collective spring in their step by the early venom shown by Mark Wood, fit again after his latest injury problems.
