"For example, one of the complaints we got was 'Aww.I used to feel like this celebrity was my friend, and now they don't feel like my friend anymore.' And we're like, 'Exactly".

The biggest of these requires users to swipe right to see friends snaps and stories instead of left - which has proven to be a change too far for many users. Before, when users would want to watch these "stories" they would have them all together on a content page, now "friends" are in one area and publishers/media in another, called 'Discover.' Other reorganization has also taken place, which many users have found confusing, hence the petition.

Just after 3 p.m. EST Thursday Snapchat users started experiencing problems with the app. I liked that you guys felt like we were friends.

Nic Rumsey, who set up the petition, wrote that some are using Virtual Private Network (VPN) apps - which use servers overseas to mask the location of a device - in order to access the older version of the platform: "That's how annoying this update has become", he said.

But now Snapchat is facing criticism that the app reorganization makes it harder to navigate.

The backlash comes as it was revealed earlier this week that Facebook is losing younger users to Snapchat in the United Kingdom, according to research by eMarketer.

The move was part of a deliberate strategy to set Snapchat apart from rivals like Twitter and Facebook's Instagram. "My male/female ratios on Snapchat are significantly different than all my other platforms", he told TechCrunch, which now influences the way he creates content for Snapchat.

The outage comes amid an uproar over a redesigned iOS app, which has users looking for ways to install the previous version.

According to Business Insider, "158 million people are using Snapchat every day", and the average person opens the app 18 times a day.

A number of social media posts that appeared to be from official Snapchat accounts promised users it would undo its latest update if a user could earn enough shares, likes or retweets on a particular post. It does not disclose its total user base.
