A 22-year-old Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militant escaped in dramatic style from the custody of jail officials after his associates opened fire on his escorts, when he was brought to a Srinagar hospital for a check-up on Tuesday. Naveed Jat was arrested from Kulgam during a successful anti-terror operation in 2014. "Naveed himself snatched the weapon of one of the policeman and opened fire", said a police official.

Srinagar's SSP Imtiaz Ismail Parray confirmed the escape of Hanzula.

Hunzullah escaped when the waiting terrorists fired at the police escort party outside the hospital. A manhunt was launched in the hospital area and alert was sounded across the Srinagar city but there was no trace of the attackers. As they were advancing towards hospital ward, two militants were already present near the stairs who abruptly fired on the cops.

Director General of Police Shesh Paul Vaid said that the attack appeared to be well-coordinated and it looks that the communication about Naveed's movement had gone from Central jail.

Police in a statement said that a nursing orderly of Central Jail Srinagar accompanied the prisoners.
