Experiments on teenagers display that those who inhale tobacco-based cigarettes and have an escalated level of these chemicals in their systems, but those who vape e cigarettes have an excessive levels of cancer inducing chemicals than nonsmokers do. Thus, e-cigarettes present the same carcinogenic chemicals as the regular cigarettes.
'Teenagers need to be warned that the vapor produced by e-cigarettes is not harmless water vapor, but actually contains some of the same toxic chemicals found in smoke from traditional cigarettes, ' Dr Rubinstein, MD, a professor of pediatrics at UCSF, said.
The group that used both e-cigarettes and traditional cigarettes had levels that were six times higher.
"There is nicotine in them, and that drives that to the brain, the part of the brain that can be very addictive", said Nancy Hans, executive director of the Prevention Council of Roanoke County.
But recent research from the University of California, San Francisco now reveals that we may have more to worry about when it comes to teenage use of e-cigarettes - beyond addiction and the possibility of transitioning to traditional cigarettes.
"Although the pairs of e-cigarettes may be less risky than tobacco smoke, our results can be used to challenge the idea that the vapor electronic cigarettes safe, because numerous volatile organic compounds that we identified are carcinogenic", write the researchers in their study.

He explained that proplyene glycol and glycerin, which are used to keep the products smoked in e-cigarettes in liquid form, are safe at room temperature.
E-cigarettes are so popular that they're now the most commonly used form of smoking among teens in the United States.
Among the compounds the researchers detected included acrylonitrile, acrolein, propylene oxide, crotonaldehyde and acrylamide. In 2016, 11 percent of high school students had used an e-cigarette in the past 30 days at the time of the survey - the CDC's definition of current use.
A new study confirms that e-cigarettes are harmful to teenagers and urges adolescents to stop putting their health at risk.
Dr Rubinstein said: 'I do not think teens are aware of the risks. They were compared with a control group of 20 non-smoking teens.
"Although smoking even one cigarette is concerning, becoming an established smoker in adolescence is of substantial clinical and public health concern and is strongly associated with continuing to smoke regularly", researchers wrote.
