President Trump continued on Sunday to attack federal law enforcement agencies investigating his 2016 campaign, tweeting that former FBI director James B. Comey had "clearly" lied under oath in testimony before a Senate committee a year ago.

On Twitter, Michael Bromwich, McCabe's lawyer, hit back at Trump's tweets about his client, calling the president's comments "childish, defamatory, disgusting & false".

"I would say the best thing the special counsel can do is to finish the investigation, gather all the information that's needed [and] come to a conclusion so the American people can make their own decisions", Lankford said.

McCabe also has been interviewed by Mueller's team and was asked about Comey's firing, a source briefed on the matter confirms to CNN.

"The Fake News is beside themselves that McCabe was caught, called out and fired".

Trump allies previously have questioned whether Mueller can lead an unbiased probe because some of his investigators have made campaign contributions to Democratic candidates, including Trump's former Democratic presidential rival Hillary Clinton.

Details of the inspector general's probe were not made public, but it involved the FBI's handling of the 2016 investigation into Trump's election rival, Democrat Hillary Clinton.

Outspoken conservative actor James Woods won the internet on Saturday when he weighed in on former CIA Director John Brennan attacking President Donald Trump over the firing of former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe.

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., noted on NBC's Meet The Press on Sunday that figuring out whether Trump's 2016 campaign coordinated with Russia is only a section of Mueller's task, which is to investigate the Russian government's overall efforts to interfere with the election.

Both sides: Donald Trump and the Kremlin have repeatedly denied any collusion, and Moscow has called the accusations of interference in the election "absurd".

Stephanopoulos asked Lankford about a statement by Trump attorney John Dowd to The Daily Beast on Saturday suggesting that the Justice Department official who appointed Mueller end the Russian Federation probe.

After an extensive and fair investigation and according to Department of Justice procedure, the Department's Office of the Inspector General (OIG) provided its report on allegations of misconduct by Andrew McCabe to the FBI's Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR).

And Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee said this past week that they had completed a draft report concluding, after a yearlong investigation, that there was no collusion or coordination between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation; committee Democrats vehemently disagreed.

Special Counsel Robert Mueller (2nd L) leaves after a closed meeting with members of the Senate Judiciary Committee June 21, 2017 at the Capitol in Washington, DC.

McCabe's firing, though stunning, was not the only sacking of the week.

Trump, however, isn't sold that McCabe's notes, or Comey's, were actually taken at the time they say they were.

They didn't clarify how Comey was lying, nor did they - as Trump would when he tweeted about the segment - misquote the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director's testimony.

Lost in all the hubbub is that McCabe was sacked for allegedly authorizing the leaking of sensitive information to a reporter and then misleading investigators when asked about it.

He became acting director after that but clashed with the Trump administration, including when he publicly rejected White House assertions that Comey had lost the support of the rank-and-file.
