Amy Sharp's sis, Renee Hoyt, informed the Creston News Advertiser that the Sharps' last interaction happened on March 15.

The family had planned to meet up with some friends at a water park, Amy Sharp's cousin, Jana Weland, told ABC News. Ms Peterson said the family told extended members they had arrived at the resort safely on March 15 but had not heard anything from them since.

"Sharp dominated the feature to collect the $500 payday while the rest of the field put on an exciting battle", the newspaper said.

"He was a true family man", Harris said.

Harris said the Sharp family was tightly knit.

She said her daughter and Kevin were married for more than 16 years and got together after a weekend to a St. Louis Cardinals baseball game.

"I guess we were all kind of hoping for the best", she said.

"They were fun-loving kids and the family was a sports fan family like you wouldn't believe", Avila said. The phone had not moved from its location since Thursday morning.

In Mexico, the Quintana Roo state prosecutors office tweeted that the bodies were found in a tourist compound.

Last week, the State Department sent out a travel advisory to Mexico due to "crime".

A statement on the website said: "While most of these homicides appeared to be targeted, criminal organisation assassinations, turf battles between criminal groups have resulted in violent crime in areas frequented by USA citizens". A missing person report was filed after they did not show up.

Autopsies are being performed in Mexico and results are pending, according to police. Local Mexican authorities have taken over the investigation, according to the State Department.

The Mexico Tourism Board said in a statement that preliminary findings found "no signs of violence or struggle".

Paulina Chávez Alonzo, a spokeswoman for the Mexican Embassy in Washington, told NBC News that the government offered its "deepest condolences to the family and friends of the Sharps". They shared a passion for University of Iowa and Kansas City Chiefs football.
