President Donald Trump said Tuesday he had congratulated Russian President Vladimir Putin on his election win in a "very good call", despite escalating tensions over the Kremlin's alleged interference in the 2016 presidential election and poisoning of a former Russian spy in the United Kingdom, a close usa ally.

President Donald Trump on Tuesday told reporters that he would meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss the arms race and foreign policy concerns.

The report cited officials familiar with the call, who said that Trump allegedly chose to ignore the warning and also did not listen to aides who instructed Trump to condemn Russian Federation on using a nerve agent in the U.K. Trump also did not bring up Russia's meddling in the 2016 election, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told members of the press, CNN reported.

"We had a very good call", Mr Trump said, adding that he expects to meet Mr Putin "in the not too distant future to discuss the arms race, which is getting out of control".

The Kremlin said another point of contention, Russia's alleged role in the poisoning of a former spy with a deadly nerve agent in Britain - the first known offensive use of a nerve toxin in Europe since World War II - was not touched upon during the call.

"In general, the conversation was constructive and businesslike and focused on overcoming the problems that have accumulated in Russian-US relations". And Russia also continues to be the prime suspect in any potential 2016 USA election meddling.

"The call had to do also with the fact that we will probably get together in the not too distant future so we can discuss arms, we can discuss the arms race".

The statement says they also expressed satisfaction with the apparent easing of tensions over North Korea's weapons program.

Trump's overture to Putin was criticized by top senators in his own Republican Party, who called Sunday's election a sham. "I see trust and hope in this; hope among our people that we will continue to work just as intensively, just as responsibly, and even more effectively", he said. The two presidents held a phone conversation and spoke in favor of developing of a practical interaction in various areas, including the issues of strategic stability and combating worldwide terrorism and emphasized the importance of coordinated efforts in limiting the arms race, according to the statement.

Moscow and Washington are at odds over Ukraine and Syria, while USA allegations that Russian Federation interfered in the US presidential election, something Moscow denies, continue to cast a shadow over ties. President Trump also floated the idea of working with Russian Federation in the near future.

The two leaders talked over the phone on Tuesday and discussed U.S. -Russia relations and denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula.

Putin won his fourth term in Sunday's presidential election with 77 percent of the vote.
