'Violent' ICE detainee escapes custody at JFK Airport, flees in taxi

A man who was supposed to be deported on Tuesday fled federal agents at JFK Airport's Terminal 4 and got away in a taxi. Above a look at the taxi queue outside the airport

A man escaped custody from federal immigration officials Tuesday night at at John F. Kennedy Airport in New York City.

ICE agents waited over an hour to notify local cops that a detainee had escaped their custody at Kennedy Airport, sources said.

Law enforcement sources said that the ICE agents took the suspect through X-ray screening, removed his handcuffs, and were about to escort him onto the flight when he sprinted away.

Port Authority officials say a review of one of the airport's cameras shows the detainee getting into the cab. He was last seen wearing either a black or purple shirt, jeans and a pair of sneakers.

Video shows the man leaving the airport in a taxi, a law enforcement source said.

The man has been described as being 6 feet, 3 inches tall, 190 pounds. He was ordered to be deported in September 2015. He originally came into the United States lawfully in 2005, but was later convicted for "multiple weapons and firearms offences".

An agency police spokesman said the escape was reported to Port Authority police officers at about 9:15 p.m. He then bolted, Port Authority police said. "Members of the public should not to attempt to apprehend him and instead immediately contact authorities".
