Volkswagen has selected partners to provide battery cells and associated technology worth around 20 billion euros ($25 billion) for its growing electric vehicle program, including additional pressure on US pioneer Tesla.
In 2015, Volkswagen was caught rigging cars to cheat on USA diesel emissions tests and paid more than 20 billion euros in fines and legal settlements. Volkswagen tells Bloomberg it intends to increase the number of factories configured to build electric vehicles from 3 as of today to 16 by 2022.
All of this will require a strategy for sourcing batteries, and VW said its new agreement "to ensure adequate battery capacity for the massive expansion of environmentally-friendly electric mobility". In the European Union, there is also a new, more time-consuming test procedure for determining pollutant and carbon dioxide emissions as well as fuel consumption in passenger cars and light commercial vehicles (WLTP). VW aims to sell more than 1 million cars powered exclusively by batteries by 2025, after selling just 43,000 electric models in 2017.
It was driven in a Tesla Model S, served entirely by the company's network of Supercharger DC fast-charging stations along the way. The first pure electric model from Volkswagen is ready to be launched in 2020 and this hatchback will be christened as ID, in line with the concept model.
Volkswagen is ramping up its production of electric vehicles as its "Roadmap E" vision takes shape.

Its becoming increasingly obvious that the global supply chain is very complex and challenging when it comes to cobalt and the rare earth minerals like Lithium that are needed for big vehicle battery packs.
The announcement comes after Volkswagen's diesel emissions scandal pushed it towards an electric agenda to save face.
It plans to purchase a total of 50 billion euro's worth of batteries to power its vehicles.
