A spokesman for CFM told Gizmodo that the engine involved in Tuesday's incident was not subject to the Service Bulletins issued following the 2016 incident, and that Southwest had implemented the recommended inspections.

Investigators are continuing to work on the Southwest 737 that had an engine blow out in flight on Tuesday, killing 43-year-old Jennifer Riordan. The engine is built by CFM International, a partnership between General Electric and Safran Aircraft Engines, a French company.

But what happens on the silver screen made it into real life after an engine of a Southwest Airlines plane in Philadelphia broke up in flight over 32,000 feet in the air.

Sumwalt said the fan blade, after suffering metal fatigue where it attached to the engine hub, has a second fracture about halfway along its length. "Also, it recommends inspections by the end of August for fan blades with 20,000 cycles, and inspections to all other fan blades when they reach 20,000 cycles".

In its letter, Southwest Airlines pointed to the ongoing National Transport Safety Board investigation into the incident but said its priority was assisting the traumatized survivors.

In a February 26 email to Southwest Airlines Chief Operating Officer Mike van de Ven obtained by the Chicago Business Journal, Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association director Bret Oestreich warned: "The truth is that there exists a concern regarding the degradation of safety within Southwest's maintenance program as determined by the Federal Aviation Administration".
