Not all of the gender wage gap can be explained by occupational choice, however. Black women make just 67.7 cents to the dollar that white men make. It would take Hispanic women until 2248 to hit the same benchmark. California law now prohibits employers from paying female employees less than men for equal work; protects employees' right to discuss wages with co-workers; prohibits retaliation against employees who seek to enforce the law; and prohibits employers from justifying a pay difference exclusively on the grounds of prior salary. If current trends continue, the wage gap won't close until 2067.
"This isn't just a problem for people who make a lot of money". It's technically the 12th-smallest gender pay gap in the country - which somebody should consider putting on a postcard for women visiting from states like Louisiana and Utah. For women of color, that percentage is even higher.
Liverpool-based Halewood Wines and Spirits, which produces Whitley Neill Gin and Pogues Irish Whiskey, saw a mean hourly rate for women as 2% lower than men's. We're as (if not better) educated, and are more competitive than ever when it comes to work experience, but are paid an average of 20 percent less. So-called pink collar jobs in fields that are female dominant-such as nursing, childcare, social work, and human resources, among others-tend to command lower salaries, despite how valuable they are to our society. Yet the fact remains: Women still don't earn as much as men in the workforce. A person's gender should not be a determining factor in their salary. "And how do we make that adjustment for everyone?" Because of this, it takes some women until April of a following year to match the salary of the opposite sex.
In a statement, National Partnership president Debra Ness said claims that wage disparity might be based entirely on women's choices are unfounded.
