The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will make its second attempt on April 12 to launch a backup satellite to replace NavIC navigation satellite constellation's IRNSS-1A, which is failing due to technical glitches. This success will bring benefits of our space programme to the common man. "Proud of team ISRO", the PM wrote.
The PSLV-C41/IRNSS-1I mission blasted off at 4.04am from the first launchpad at the Sathish Dhawan Space Centre. "I am really grateful to the entire ISRO family for having worked this hard and making IRNSS-1I a success", K Sivan, chairman of the ISRO, said after the mission was declared a success.
Like all other IRNSS satellites, IRNSS-1I also has a lift-off mass of 1425 kg.
On the concerns raised by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) on the navigation satellite system, Sivan said with the launch of IRNSS-1I, the system was now put in place and the applications would have to be rolled out.

The IRNSS 1I satellite joins seven other satellites in the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System, also known as NavIC, which stands for Navigation with Indian Constellation.
Till now, PSLV has successfully launched 52 Indian satellites and 237 satellites for foreign customers. We are going to have GSAT, PSLV missions.
The navigation payload of IRNSS-1I transmits signals for the determination of position, velocity and time and operated in the L5-band and S-band. The first one, IRNSS-1H, could not be put into space because of its failure in August previous year. In a text-book launch, about 18 minutes later, the rocket injected GSAT-6A into the geostationary transfer orbit as the ISRO scientists broke into celebrations at the mission control centre.
The need for an indigenous GPS in India was identified after the Kargil conflict when India desperately needed services of satellite-based navigation system but did not have one of its own. It is a constellation of seven satellites which helps to provide accurate positioning information to users in India and in regions extending up to 1,500 km from its boundary. The satellite was launched astride GSLV-F08 launch vehicles.
There were plans for the 5.7-tonne GSAT-11 mission, a throughput satellite using Arianne rocket, he said, adding that it would be the heaviest satellite the space agency has made so far. The satellite had cost the country Rs 270 crore, according to The Times of India.
