Seven schoolchildren have reportedly been killed and another 12 injured after being attacked by a knife-wielding man near their school in north-west China.

Male born in 1990 on April 20 this year in Shaanxi province attacked the children when they returned home after the school day.

A suspect is said to be in police custody.

A local government statement said the attack happened at Mizhi County Number Three secondary school, at around 18:10 local time (10:10 GMT).

Private gun ownership is strictly prohibited in China so mostly knives and homemade explosives are used in violent crimes. His alleged rampage is just the latest on a long line of knife attacks in China, with the most recent one happening in February.
