Russia's U.N. Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia told the U.N. Security Council on Friday that the United States, France and Britain were only interested in ousting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's government and containing Russian Federation.
Russian Federation is likely to call for a meeting of the United Nations Security Council to discuss US, British and French air strikes on Syria, one of its lawmakers says.
"We continue to observe unsafe military preparations for an illegal act of force against a sovereign state in what would constitute a breach of worldwide law", he said.
"We will continue sharing technical and strategic information with our partners, particularly with the United Kingdom and the United States".
"The sole thing that they have an interest in is to oust the Syrian government and to deter, contain the Russian Federation", he added.
"At stake in Syria is the potential for confrontation, if not outright conflict, between the USA and Russian Federation, former Cold War foes whose relations have deteriorated in recent years over Moscow's intervention in Ukraine, its interference in the 2016 US presidential election and, most recently, its support for Syrian President Bashar Assad".
A fact-finding mission from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons is expected to head to Douma, the site of the suspected attack.
