He wasn't legally permitted to end his life in Australia, where euthanasia is prohibited.

He told reporters he had not given much thought to a last meal and acknowledged he was not without regrets. The organization was founded by Dr. Philip Nitschke, who ran a successful crowdfunding campaign to ensure Goodall would undergo a comfortable last journey.

"There are many things I would like to do, but it's too late.I'm content to leave them undone".

Speaking yesterday in the room where he later died, Goodall said: "My life has been rather poor for the a year ago or so".

"Tonight the board of the foundation will study the documents and also judge the wish to die of David Goodall", Eternal Spirit head Erika Preisig said in an email, adding that the answer would "likely" be yes.

The scientist, who was not terminally ill, had asked for no funeral or remembrance ceremony.

Australian biologist and ecologist Dr David Goodall, AM, has died in Basel, Switzerland, aged 104.

He died while Ode to Joy from Beethoven's ninth symphony played in the background of his room.

Goodall arrived in Switzerland on May 7, after visiting relatives in the French city of Bordeaux.

Goodall told a news conference on Wednesday (May 9) Switzerland's liberal assisted suicide laws let him commit suicide legally, in contrast to his home where it remains forbidden.

He said he would have preferred to die in Australia and previously voiced his resentment over the country's laws.

But that legislation, which takes effect in June 2019, only applies to terminally ill patients of sound mind and a life expectancy of less than six months.

He was born in the U.K.in April 1914, just before the outbreak of World War I, and moved from London to Australia as a child.

Goodall was a father of four and a grandfather of 12 and was married three times.

By his bedside Thursday will be one of the scientist's sons along with some grandchildren, who came from the United States and France respectively.

Goodall had asked for and received assistance from Life Circle, a Basel-based organization that helps foreigners with the euthanasia process in Switzerland.

The scientist will take the drug Nembutal, a barbiturate, intravenously. "David turned the wheel to allow the solution to flow", the statement said.

Staff at the hospital in Basel were quoted as saying Thursday that he had "gone in peace". During this time he became highly influential in the development of quantitative ecology. He finally chose to get professional help in the European country, which is the only country that offers assisted suicide to foreign nationals.
