The Indian Meteorological Department has forecast high velocity winds, rain and possible thunder and lightning for Tuesday as well. "The government said that all evening schools (second shift that starts in afternoon) will be shut on Tuesday", an official statement said.

Parts of the national capital witnessed a dust storm coupled with light rains in the evening today, with the MeT department keeping an eye on its progression and severity.

"In the next 24 hours, hill states like Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh will continue to experience thunderstorms as they have experienced yesterday".

Dust storms affected life in Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan.

Four colour codes are issued to indicate various categories of alerts.

The high-intensity dust storm hit New Delhi and adjoining NCR including Gurugram, Noida, Rohtak, Bhiwani, Jhajjar Gurugram, Bagpat, Meerut and Ghaziabad.

No casualties were reported in the dust storm that hit the national Capital on Monday night, but the storm caused power cuts and uprooted trees in areas such as Mayur Vihar, Janakpuri and Dwarka.

The storm was caught on camera over Bikaner in the northern state of Rajasthan.

According to Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) movement of metro trains will remain normal if the range of wind speed is between 70-90 kmph, but trains will enter with a restricted speed of 40 kmph or less at the platforms on the elevated section.

The IMD said that duststorms very likely at isolated places over Rajasthan, the Met office said.

The advisory also asked people to avoid taking a bath or shower or running water for any goal.

The met department has issued warnings about thunderstorms and squalls across 20 states: Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Bihar, Assam, Meghalaya, West Bengal, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Sikkim, Odisha, Telangana, north Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
