Lajovic will next face South Africa's Kevin Anderson, who reached his first Madrid quarter-final with a 6-3, 7-6 (7) triumph over Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany.

The victory is one of the biggest in Edmund's career, as he edged Djokovic 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 to set up a third-round clash with Belgium's David Goffin.

Highly-rated Dominic Thiem battled past Federico Delbonis 4-6 6-3 7-5 late in the day, while second seed Alexander Zverev was on court until after midnight before recording a 6-2 7-5 win over Evgeny Donskoy.

The pair traded breaks to begin the match before a double fault by Djokovic, now ranked 12th in the world, handed Edmund the initiative.

Edmund's barnstorming forehand wreaked havoc throughout and it was no surprise when the winners tally showed the Briton 30-11 ahead by the time Djokovic sent a final backhand long.

World number one and top seed Simona Halep had earlier maintained her charge towards a third consecutive Madrid title as she eased past Kristyna Pliskova 6-1 6-4.

After the opening exchanges saw him and Nishikori trade a break each for 3-3, the 12-time Grand Slam victor then pounced on the Japanese player's serve at 6-5 ahead, taking the set with a forehand victor.

Djokovic was broken to love at 2-2 but he recovered well by pouncing on his opponent's second serve to clinch the opening set in just over an hour.

Djokovic has reunited with his former coach Marian Vajda, as well as fitness trainer Gebhard Phil-Gritsch in efforts to bring his game back to scratch.

Raptors not all-in on Casey's future

Oreo for Honor 7X begins rolling out in US
If you are living outside the United Kingdom , do not worry, the update should arrive to other regions in the coming weeks. Arriving as EMUI 8.0, the update brings along several enhancements (in addition to the usual Oreo goodies, of course).

This was the first time in four meetings with Djokovic that Edmund was able to win a set, let alone the match.

In the women's tournament, Maria Sharapova reached the quarter-finals with an impressive 6-3, 6-4 demolition of France's Kristina Mladenovic. The Serb has struggled this year after saying he returned to action too quickly following the lingering right elbow injury.

And it follows his poor performances at the Indian Wells Masters, Miami Open and Barcelona Open.

The second-ranked Wozniacki needed to win the title in Madrid to overcome Romania's Halep for the No. 1 spot.

SERENA WILLIAMS is a doubt for the French Open, having withdrawn from next week's Italian Open.

The tournament made the announcement via Twitter. "I try to always remind myself and be grateful for that", said the 12-time Grand Slam champion.

Kohlschreiber is set to play the third round against South Africa's Kevin Anderson, sixth-seed and a finalist at the 2017 US Open, who defeated Kazakhstan's Mikhail Kukushkin, 5-7, 7-6 (3), 6-2.

Catherine Bellis takes Williams' place in the Rome draw.
