This comes after mine workers got trapped after an quake hit the Masakhane gold mine west of Johannesburg on Thursday.

Wellsted said they were in the process of contacting the families of the four miners who had died. They will be put back in soon once we have done our assessment.

13 Sibanye-Stillwater employees were initially trapped, though officials were able to rescue several of the workers.

"Proto teams have been sent underground to look for the eight missing workers who are still trapped underground", he said.

Sibanye-Stillwater produces more gold in South Africa than any other company. The Department of Mineral Resources and the Department of Labour needs to take seriously this deteriorating safety record by conducting a thorough investigation.

"The NUM is angry and concerned at the rate at which mining incidents are happening at Sibanye-Stillwater", it said. Another employee has been located, but two employees remain unaccounted for.

Rescue operations have entered their second day at Sibanye-Stillwater's Driefontein mine in Carletonville‚ near Johannesburg.

The Driefontein accident was caused by a seismic event at about 1:30 p.m. local time on Thursday, Sibanye said.
