Protesters have been alleging that the plant was polluting groundwater in their area.

It has been officially announced that nine people were killed in police firing during the violence.

A protester was killed by a rubber bullet in southern India Wednesday, a day after 10 were shot dead when police opened fire on a rally demanding the closure of a copper plant, officials said. The agitators have been demanding the closure of the plant run by the Vedanta Group.

The High Court also directed the Centre to hold public hearing before granting environment clearance within 4 months to Sterlite plant.

Of the almost 100 people injured, the condition of two was said to be critical in hospital. "Who ordered the police firing on protesters?"

Most of the injured are civilians but 36 policemen also suffered injuries of various kinds in mob fury, official sources said.

Multiple doctors working in the casualty and accident ward alleged that stones were pelted at the medical team, and a senior doctor was manhandled.

The Madras High Court on Wednesday directed Vedanta to stop the construction of Unit II of its Sterlite copper plant in Thoothukudi in south Tamil Nadu.

The city's Eral Bazaar, which is usually bustling with economic activity on a regular day, was nearly deserted late evening.

Meanwhile, in fresh police firing, at least one person was killed and five injured in Thoothukudi on Wednesday. "People of Thoothukudi should cooperate with police".

Tweeting in Tamil, Rahul extended his support to the protesters and said that (PM) Modi's bullet can not crush them.

"We are shocked and saddened to hear about the incident and we are working with the relevant authorities to ensure the safety of our employees, facilities and the surrounding community", said Kuldip Kaura, CEO of Vedanta Resources during a call with reporters. They hurled stones at the collector's office, he said in a statement.

Shares were down 3.2 percent as of 0500 GMT, after falling as much as 5.50 percent earlier in the session.

"Copper contributes nearly 7-8 percent to the consolidated operating profit and as much as 30 rupees (44 cents) to the share price, therefore it definitely hurts the company's numbers", said Goutam Chakraborty, analyst with Emkay Global.
