Beaches in Florida were largely empty ahead of Memorial Day as a slowly intensifying storm carrying brisk winds and heavy rain approached the U.S. Gulf Coast on Sunday.
"Tropical-storm-force winds and a hazardous storm surge are possible along portions of the central and eastern U.S. Gulf Coast beginning on Sunday", Brown wrote from the center in Miami.
At 5 p.m. EDT Saturday, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said Alberto was about 95 miles (155 kilometers) north of the western tip of Cuba and moving north at 13 mph (20 kph).

Alberto, the first named Atlantic storm system of 2018, is expected to bring heavy rain and flooding when it makes landfall sometime on Memorial Day. Still that means the path of the storm will still reach landfall somewhere between Apalachicola, Panama City and Pensacola just before daybreak on Monday.

Heavy rain and tropical storm conditions are likely to reach the northern Gulf Coast well ahead of the center of the large storm system. They and many other Gulf Coast residents are preparing for Subtropical Storm Alberto to make its way through the Gulf of Mexico to land.
The Florida Panhandle has been issued with a mandatory evacuation notice, affecting some 4,200 housing units, while Taylor County, to the east has a voluntary evacuation order in place for its coastal areas. The official National Hurricane Center forecast released Thursday said the season is likely to be near or above normal.

A Storm Surge Watch means there is a possibility of life-threatening inundation, from rising water moving inland from the coastline, in the indicated locations.
