President Donald Trump told reporters in an impromptu news conference on the White House lawn he had given North Korean leader Kim Jong Un a phone number to allow him to reach him directly.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and President Donald Trump in Singapore.

Trump specifically pushed back against Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., who said on the Senate floor that the summit was more show than substance. "President Trump, while you have Kim Jong Un's attention, use it to free North Koreans".

Even before the summit, USA officials said the future of American troops on the Korean peninsula was something that would be a matter for Seoul and Washington to deal with.

"He has proven time and again to be right when everyone - even the people around him - thought he was wrong", Huckabee said.

"The public still has a lot of questions about the North Korea situation that were not answered by this meeting", Patrick Murray, director of the Monmouth University Polling Institute, said in a statement.

While the agreement fell short of outlining concrete measures that would lead to Kim giving up his nuclear weapons program - the stated long-term goal of USA negotiators - it gave Trump and Kim a piece of paper to point to as a sign of progress and a symbol of goodwill.

Trump was then asked by an unidentified reporter, "How can Kim Jong Un love his people if he's killing them?"

Kim was clearly the star of the 42-minute program as his handshake with Trump didn't appear until 20 minutes in. I want to have a good relationship with many other countries. Don't let anyone think anything different.

It was his decision, Trump said, to suspend joint military exercises between South Korea and the United States, which North Korea has long condemned as an invasion rehearsal.

At their meeting in Singapore, the two signed a document to bring peace to the Korean peninsula and rid it of nuclear arms. He speaks and his people sit up in attention.

North Korea has perpetuated human rights abuses for decades. "When a military official from another government salutes. you return that", Sanders said.

Kyodo, however, added that some experts see a 15-year timeline for the North's complete denuclearization.

But the president has fawned so much about Kim since their meeting, you might wonder if he is simply flattering a man with nuclear missiles or exalting the kind of leader he truly admires? Actually, I think sarcasm is one thing reporters do understand.

Trump went on to praise the "great chemistry" he had with Kim and listed what he considered to be his administration's accomplishments in containing the North Korean regime.
