After flopping for England at Euro 2016, Sterling has a point to prove and his fine form in City's Premier League title-winning campaign was on display in his eye-catching first-half performance.

He was booked for simulation in the second half which could see him receive further uncalled for criticism, but the 23-year-old's strong mentality will surely help him in that regard going into a tournament where a five star Sterling will be required throughout.

"We also won the ball back really quickly, and I thought we played from the back with good composure".

Kane scored England's second goal with a fine finish and linked play with confidence in the final third.

If England lacked one thing, it was a composed and cultured central midfielder capable of dictating their tempo at the times they needed to adapt.

England's first goal came from their defenders with Trippier taking a corner and Cahill headed home while in midfield Obi Mikel and Moses gave their all to ensure that Southgate's side were on top and quicker to the ball. In the period leading up to their goal they changed their system and it took us a little while to figure out how to deal with that. It was a decent exercise for us to adjust to that. "The game will be a hard one because they parade some of the best legs in the English Premier League, but we also have guys who have played there and are still playing there, so we will put up a good fight and come out with a victory", Simy concluded.

Speaking to ITV about his manager, Sterling said: "He's honest, he tells you his exact mind".

"Nevertheless, Raheem has been fantastic with it all, he manages that situation very, very well".

Sterling's finishing vastly improved at Manchester City in the past year but it remains to be seen if that is natural development or the fact Pep Guardiola's side created so many chances to begin with. "It was great to score - it's always nice for a striker and now I'm looking forward to the game on Thursday".
