Peru started like the side that memorably beat Scotland at the 1978 World Cup finals, but then emerged for the second half more like the team that capitulated 6-0 to Argentina in the second round group phase - almost a decade later it was confirmed its government was bribed by the Argentine junta to arrange the pasting.

"Fine margins" as they say as Eriksen found the decisive pass that Poulsen slid in to give Denmark the lead.

His 29th cap for Denmark, the opener was just Poulsen's fifth and brought the first time he had scored in consecutive games for his country, after netting 2-0 friendly win over Mexico.

Ricardo Gareca opted to introduce Peru's record goalscorer Paolo Guerrero and the veteran nearly made an instant impact, but the striker's header from 10 yards was sent straight into Schmeichel's hands.

It was a sublime save that secured all three points for Denmark from a game many observers feel they probably deserved to lose.

Denmark´s Norwegian coach said he had no problem with the VAR awarding a penalty against his team after the referee initially missed Poulsen clipping the boot of Cueva.

Orlando City's Yoshimar Yotun lashed the ball into Schmeichel's midriff from 25 yards as Peru made a positive, energetic start to the game and Edison Flores lifted a powerful shot over the crossbar from just outside the box.

Denmark looked more assured after the restart.

After years of sorrow, Peru have gone to extraordinary lengths to support their team with fans quitting jobs and sleeping on floors to make it to Russian Federation having failed to make the World Cup since 1982.

Peru returns to the World Cup for the first time since 1982.
