Free-to-play game "Fortnite Battle Royale" recently passed the $US1 billion revenue mark thanks exclusively to its in-app purchases, according to a new report from SuperData Research.

Franchises that would lead the market in the past, including Call of Duty and Battlefield, have even made the decision to integrate battle royale modes into their future titles given the apparent success of the genre.

A new report estimates that "Fortnite: Battle Royale" has generated a billion dollars in revenue. Overall, there wasn't a lot of action and it caused the game to feel boring. That might have led some to forget that the game was originally launched in early access in July 2017, with a game mode now known as Save The World. Games like PUBG, H1Z1 and DayZ may have started the trend, but Fortnite's caused it to explode into the mainstream.
