As officials in the U.S. capital of Washington and in the neighboring state of Virginia brace for the first anniversary of a white nationalist rally that exploded in deadly violence, U.S. President Donald Trump Saturday issued a plea for unity. The group came together in direct response to white nationalists who gathered in Charlottesville for a "Unite the Right" rally on August 12, 2017. I condemn all types of racism and acts of violence. "Peace to ALL Americans!" the president tweeted.

This weekend marks one year since white nationalists took to the streets of Charlottesville in a demonstration of anger that drew crowds of outraged counterprotesters, one of whom was left dead.

"It's a sad indictment of this country that we are even having to deal with organized white supremacists", Mike Stark, an organizer for the march to Lafayette Park, said in a statement.

The mother of Heather Heyer, the woman killed a year ago when a white nationalist rammed his auto into counter-protesters in Charlottesville, is now warning people not to "respond to the violence" of the Unite the Right 2 rally.

Last year, 22-year-old Clara Carlson faced down a group of white supremacists who marched through campus, surrounding her and a group of friends. James Alex Fields, Jr.is charged with driving his auto into a group of counter-protesters, killing 32-year-old Heather Heyer and injuring dozens of people.

Members of the leftist Answer Coalition plan a "mass action" to protest the white nationalists.

Participants are expected to meet at Washington's Foggy Bottom subway station at 5 p.m. ET before marching to Lafayette Square park, across the street from the White House, according to the permit application.

On Saturday, Trump condemned "all types of racism" in a Twitter post marking the anniversary.

A couple of dozen far-right activists arriving Sunday for their "Unite the Right 2" rally were heavily outnumbered by a phalanx of law enforcement officers and counterprotesters who shouted emphatically and urged them to go home. And the events likely will be dwarfed by counterprotests, for which permits also have been issued.

Some say they had hoped for better relations this year.

Anniversary events this year in Charlottesville have been largely peaceful.

Bro also thanked Virginia State Police for their presence and sacrifice, leaving flowers for the two officers, Lt. H. Jay Cullen and trooper-pilot Berke M.M. Bates, who were killed in a helicopter crash related to last year's events.

Charlottesville rejected Unite the Right's request to stage the repeat rally, so the march has been relocated to Washington DC, where police have promised a heavy presence that will separate the demonstrators from the likely much-larger counter-protester gathering.
