This has reignited an old internal attorney debate over whether Trump's team of attorneys should have cooperated fully with Mueller's attorneys, as attorney Dowd and another former Trump attorney Ty Cobb successfully argued at first to show the president had nothing to hide. And he certainly could have refused to do it voluntarily and forced the Mueller team to subpoena him to the grand jury.
McGahn has told Mueller's team that he never personally witnessed Trump breaking the law, but the information he has divulged could be potentially damaging.
The president was honoring employees of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Customs and Border Protection.
Jay Sekulow, an attorney for Trump, said the strategy was also created to help speed the investigation while protecting the White House as an institution.
Meanwhile, on Friday Mr. Trump said he has no regrets about yanking former CIA Director John Brennan's security clearance.
