His passion and determination were unsurpassed in the U.S. Senate, and his moral compass was unfailing.

Most recently, he was a thorn in the side of President Donald Trump, keeping up his criticism of the White House even while undergoing severe medical treatment in Arizona.

Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown released a statement Saturday night saying, "John McCain was an American hero who embodied our nation's most cherished values: service and sacrifice".

The longtime Republican leader died Saturday at the age of 81.

In his valedictory memoir, "The Restless Wave", McCain wrote of the world he inhabited: "I hate to leave it".

McConnell noted that McCain's absence from the Senate has shrunk his majority to 50-49.

Obama writes that they "saw this country as a place where anything is possible - and citizenship as our patriotic obligation to ensure it forever remains that way".

In New Hampshire that year, McCain defeated George W. Bush in an 18-point blowout, only to be pushed out of the race in SC.

"We extend our deepest condolences to his wife City and children Meghan, Bridget and James, as they mourn the loss of a great man and legendary public servant".

He was "one of the most principled people I've ever known", Brown said.

The former presidential nominee, and once a prisoner of war, initially announced news of his cancer in July past year.

Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey has released a statement calling Sen. McCain delivered the speech with a winning earnestness and subtle comic timing, proving once again that he understood the value of self-parody when it came to winning the hearts and minds of the American people.

"That is the cause that binds us and is so much more powerful and worthy than the small differences that divide us,"McCain said". The Republican governor added that McCain's "spirit, service and fierce independence shaped the state with which he became synonymous".

"Senator John McCain believed that every citizen has a responsibility to make something of the freedoms given by our Constitution, and from his heroic service in the Navy to his 35 years in Congress, he lived by his creed every day", said former president Bill Clinton. "He's not a war hero", Trump said at an event in Iowa. Thank you for all your continued support and prayers.

U.S. Republican Sen. John McCain, who spent six years as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam, has died after battling brain cancer.

On July 28, he cast another deciding vote that scuttled the so-called "skinny repeal" of Obamacare.

After surviving that election, though, McCain took on conservatives in his party over the federal debt and Democrats over foreign policy.

McCain said in September that his doctors had given him a "very poor prognosis". He had battled brain cancer.

John McCain is treated in a Hanoi hospital during the Vietnam War in November 1967.

McCain also helped co-author the landmark and bipartisan McCain-Feingold campaign finance reform that passed in 2002, and often spoke out about torture - an issue he was passionate about because of his experience as a prisoner of war.

The politician faced off against fellow senator Barack Obama in the 2008 presidential election as the Republican nominee.

That made him the unlikely saviour of the signature legislative achievement of Barack Obama, the man who beat him for president in 2008.
