Announcing the murder statistic - a record high - police minister Bheki Cele said the number is close to that of a war zone, with nearly 57 people killed on an average day.

"Many murders were linked to gang violence in Western Cape province, whose capital is Cape Town", said a report from The Daily Mail.

Cele revealed earlier today that over 20 300 people had been murdered during the last financial year, which meant the murder rate had increased by 6.9 per cent.

The figures show that murder is up from 19,016 murders in 2016/17 to 20,336 this financial year.

Police committee chair Francois Beukman, who was shocked by this revelation, said that the figure was "unacceptable". In 2017/2018‚ 20‚336 murders were recorded‚ an average of 57 people killed every day.

"However, we welcome the fresh approach of the new top leadership of the police to recognise and tackle this problem".
