Golovkin was angered with the decision, the Kazakh storming out of the ring and refusing to do a post-bout interview.

Canelo Alvarez celebrates after defeating Gennady Golovkin (not pictured) in the middleweight world championship boxing match at T-Mobile Arena.

The Las Vegas fight came almost a year to the day since a split-decision draw left the Kazakh boxer stunned.

The middleweight pair were both comfortably inside the 11st 6lb middleweight limit at Friday's weigh in at the T-Mobile Arena.

Judge Glenn Feldman scored the fight 114-114, and judges Steve Weisfeld and Dave Moretti had it 115-113 for Canelo. This time around, a victor was declared as the judges who saw the tilt tipping over to Mexican's side, 115-113, outnumbered the lone judge who scored the fight 114-114.

Therefore, a score of 115-113 to Canelo is not an injustice and could be gaining more traction as "a robbery" due to the first fight result. Both landed well to the head and Golovkin controlled some rounds with his jab though neither were ever in any trouble of going down.

Champ: Canelo Alvarez reacts after winning the fight. Originally, the pair fought previous year in September in Las Vegas. The ultimate winners may nonetheless be the fans and sport, as both boxers conceded Canelo-GGG 3 was a possibility.

Promoter Oscar De La Hoya cited the bad blood between middleweights Gary "Spike" O'Sullivan and David Lemieux when he said this had the potential to be the fight of the year. Golovkin, however, fought his way back into the fight and started to tag Alvarez. The twelve and final round with the fight hanging close Canelo went after Golovkin but slipped.

Nearly immediately there was talk of a third fight between two middleweights who now know each other well.

The first six rounds were scored as followed: Canelo won rounds 2, 3, 5 and 6, whilst Golovkin took 1 and 4 (on all four cards). "It was a clear victory". "It was a great fight, but in the end, it was a victory for Mexico", said Alvarez. "It was a fight of two champions tonight".

Alvarez said in the days leading to the fight that he went to bed every night visualising a knockout.
