Paul Pogba has been informed today that he will no longer be considered as a candidate to be Manchester United captain, having been handed the role in any game that regular skipper Antonio Valencia has been unavailable for so far this season.

Derby County beat Manchester United 8-7 in a dramatic penalty shootout at Old Trafford to reach the Carabao Cup fourth round.

"The only truth is that I made the decision of Paul not to be the second captain anymore", Mourinho told Sky Sports News.

"I am the manager, I can make these decisions, no fall-out at all, no problems at all, just one decision that I don't have to explain".

Mourinho was said to be furious with Pogba after his mistake cost United the three points against Wolves. After United's opening day victory over Leicester City, Pogba claimed he would be fined if he said what he wanted to say about his situation at United.

Pogba has already been linked with a move away from Old Trafford with Barcelona interested before the close of the summer transfer window. We had the personality to take penalties and play the way we did.

"I think teams are scared when they see Man United attacking and attacking", said the midfielder.

The red card which inevitably followed brought Lee Grant into action for the first time as a United player and with five minutes to play he was picking the ball out of his net as Jack Marriott smartly followed in Mount's initial shot to turn home what appeared likely to be a victor. "I don't blame a player missing in penalties because I knew if it went in the direction".
