In yet another tragedy that brings into focus Kolkata's crumbling infrastructure, the Majerhat bridge connecting Alipore in the north of the city to New Alipore in the south crashed on Tuesday evening, killing one and leaving at least 21 injured. Many cars were also seen caught under the collapsed section of the bridge.

Following the incident, ambulances and disaster management response force personnel with heavy machinery rushed to the spot to carry out rescue work.

ARMY, Navy and CISF teams were deployed to assist the NDRF, Fire Brigade and the Kolkata Police in the rescue operation. But there is no flight available now.

"I have come to see the rescue work".

The bridge also has a history of a portion caving in around 17 years ago, which was rebuilt by the state PWD department, said Khsiti Goswami, who was the PWD minister of the CPM-led Left Font government.
