Twitter has announced that it had banned far-right conspiracy theorist Alex Jones from its platform as well as the account of Infowars, the website he operates.

The company said in a statement that it implemented the ban because it was not Jones's first violation.

Jones was suspended from Twitter for one week last month after he posted a video in which he said, "Now is time to act on the enemy before they do a false flag".

The video in question showed Jones shouting at and berating Oliver Darcy, a CNN journalist, for some 10 minutes in between two congressional hearings focused on social media. The aggressive encounter was filmed by Jones on Periscope, which is owned by Twitter.

We will continue to evaluate reports we receive regarding other accounts potentially associated with @realalexjones or @infowars and will take action if content that violates our Rules is reported or if other accounts are utilized in an attempt to circumvent their ban. "Jones ranted at the reporter, as well as Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, following back-to-back congressional hearings where Dorsey addressed online election meddling, as well as accusations of political bias and conservative censorship on the platform".

Twitter initially took a more tepid stance on taking action against Jones.

Jones says his shows, which are broadcast on radio, YouTube and other platforms, reach at least 70 million people a week.

The shooting left 26 children and adults dead at a CT elementary school. "Glad Twitter is taking steps to put an end to the abusive behavior from Alex Jones & Infowars", the tweet stated. Jones and his followers have been harassing users for years; namely the parents of the Sandy Hook victims and others who have spoken out against gun violence. Thus far, efforts to hold Jones accountable to the community guidelines of sites he leveraged have resulted in a almost 50 per cent loss of viewership to Infowars.

He was sued for defamation by families of some of the children killed in that attack, which left 20 children and six adults dead.

While running for president in 2015, Donald Trump told Jones his reputation was 'amazing'.
