When President Donald Trump authorized the FBI to conduct an investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, only one thing was certain: A media battle for the hearts and minds of the American people would ensue.

An attorney for Keyser reaffirmed her previous statement that she doesn't know Kavanaugh and has no recollection of ever being at a gathering or party where he was present, the Senate Judiciary Committee said in a statement Saturday night.

The FBI reached out to a second woman who accused Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexual misconduct, the woman's lawyer said Saturday.

Why didn't Mr Kavanaugh and his Republican supporters want the FBI to investigate?

Recognizing that Flake and a handful of other senators' votes appeared contingent upon the investigation, Republican leaders and the White House relented.

The probe, though, will be limited in scope in ways determined by the White House, a person familiar with the proceedings said on Saturday. Jeff Flake and Lisa Murkowski. If Kavanaugh is confirmed, that could increase the number of women and liberals who turn out to vote.

On Thursday, Blasey Ford testified to Congress that an intoxicated Kavanaugh pushed her down on a bed, groped her, tried to remove her clothing and held his hand over her mouth when she tried to scream for help.

Kavanaugh, who is a judge with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, has vehemently denied the allegation.

The inquiry, which will last no more than a week, is a limited background check of Judge Kavanaugh, not a full-fledged criminal investigation.

The senator from Hawaii sat down for an interview with ABC News' George Stephanopolous to discuss the pending investigation into Judge Kavanaugh's allegations, calling it a "farce". Kavanaugh has denied the allegations.

The FBI is planning on questioning several key witnesses, including Kavanaugh's high school friend Mark Judge, but not Swetnick herself, according to The New York Times.

Lawyers for P.J. Smyth and Leland Ingham Keyser, two others who Ford said were in the house when she was attacked, have said their clients are willing to cooperate "fully" with the FBI's investigation.

Should Swetnick's claims be left out, the FBI's investigation will focus specifically on allegations from Christine Blasey Ford and Deborah Ramirez.

According toNBC News, the White House counsel's office has also "given the Federal Bureau of Investigation a list of witnesses they are permitted to interview", a restriction that "may make it hard to pursue additional leads in a case in which a Supreme Court nominee has been accused of sexual assault". "It is illegal to obstruct Committee investigations", Grassley said in the letter.

Kavanaugh has denied Ford's accusation, as well as those of two other women that emerged afterward.

The four-paragraph letter, addressed to Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, and ranking Democrat Sen.

"White House spokesman Raj Shah said the Senate set the scope and duration of the investigation and that the White House is letting the FBI agents do what they are trained to do".

Ramirez has accused Kavanaugh of exposing his genitals to her at a house party in the 80s while they were both students at Yale University.
