At least two people were killed as Hurricane Michael, one of the most powerful storms ever to hit the USA, slammed into the state of Florida, unleashing a trail of destruction by flooding beach towns, peeling off roofs and snapping trees before advancing to the Carolinas. It was the most powerful hurricane on record to hit the Panhandle.

Michael remained risky even though it weakened over the course of Wednesday afternoon and evening. It was racing to the northeast at 24 miles per hour (39 kph) amid warnings it could spread damaging winds and more flash flooding in the region before moving offshore.

North and SC are both still recovering from Hurricane Florence, which left dozens dead and caused billions of dollars in damage last month.

Michael made landfall as a 155 miles per hour Category 4 storm Wednesday afternoon in Mexico Beach, Florida.

Numerous houses in Mexico Beach were reduced to naked concrete foundations or piles of debris.

Horrific before and after photos have captured the utter devastation inflicted by Hurricane Michael after it crashed into several small towns on the Florida Panhandle with near-record force. And then there was the life-threatening storm surge. "When the water came in, houses started floating in front of our home".

"Hurricane Michael can not break Florida", Scott vowed.

"I have had employees going to the communities where our kids live, going door to door and checking", said Principal Britt Smith by phone.

The National Hurricane Center has issued its final advisory on Michael, now a post-tropical cyclone speeding off over the Atlantic Ocean.

In Wakulla County, the sheriff's office made a list of people who chose to ride out the storm and will check on them Thursday, sheriff's captain Chris Savary said. "There was a tree involved".

The youngest of four until her father remarried and had two more daughters, Sarah loved being around her big family and made everything more fun, Roy and Amber Radney said in phone interviews with The Associated Press on Thursday. The storm also has brought flash flooding to hurricane-weary parts of the Carolinas and Virginia.

Rescuers searched for survivors in the rubble of ravaged beach communities on Thursday after Michael, one of the most powerful hurricanes in U.S. history, slammed into the Florida Panhandle, causing widespread flooding and killing at least seven people.

Its rapid intensification caught many by surprise, although the storm later weakened.

President Donald Trump promised to provide speedy assistance to help recovery efforts.

The governors of North and SC urged residents to brace for heavy rain and storm-force winds as Michael plowed northward up the Atlantic seaboard.

The hurricane made landfall near Mexico Beach, Florida, at around 14:00 (18:00 GMT) on Wednesday, according to the NHC. It was a relatively calm year except for hurricanes Michael and Florence last month.

Where the capital markets could take another share is areas like reinsurance sidecars, which have already been seeing some losses from recent global catastrophe events, or private ILS quota shares, where investors can take a share of a re/insurers loss exposure to a storm like Michael.
