The kingdom has called such allegations "baseless" but has not offered any evidence Khashoggi ever left the consulate.

Authorities recovered the audio from Khashoggi's iPhone and his iCloud account, the newspaper said.

Separately, a video has emerged of men described as Saudi intelligence officers entering and leaving Turkey.

Upon noticing the watch, Khashoggi's assailants tried to unlock the Apple Watch with multiple password attempts, ultimately using the journalist's fingerprint to unlock the smart watch.

An Apple Watch can record audio and can sync that later with an iPhone over a Bluetooth connection if it is close by.

As the controversy intensified, the Washington Post reported Turkish officials had recordings made from inside the building that allegedly proved their claims Khashoggi was tortured and killed at the consulate.

Turkish sources allege he was killed by a 15-strong team of Saudi agents.

Trump acknowledged the possibility that the Saudis are behind Khashoggi's disappearance, but explained the Saudi government has denied involvement in "every way you can imagine".

The American daily further reported that USA intelligence had intercepted communications between Saudi officials discussing a plan to lure Khashoggi back to the kingdom and detain him. It echoes how Russian Federation has described the men who allegedly carried out the Novichok nerve agent poisonings in Salisbury, England, in March.

The statement issued via the State-run press agency on Sunday also warned the kingdom would respond to any steps taken against it. This time, however, it acknowledged for the first time that Saudi Arabia was accused of killing Khashoggi.

In an excerpt from an interview with CBS's "60 Minutes" to be broadcast on Sunday night, Trump said: "It's being looked at very, very strongly".

The obituary-style piece follows an opinion piece Ms Cengiz wrote for the Washington Post last week, calling on US President Donald Trump to investigate his disappearance.

U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to call King Salman soon as questions mount about the disappearance of the Saudi journalist.

No details of the conversation were released.

Jamal Khashoggi, a critic of the Saudi regime, has been missing since he entered the country's consulate in Turkey on 2 October.

"Well, I'll tell you what I don't want to do", he said.

Saudi officials have said that he left shortly afterwards but Turkish officials and his fiancée, who was waiting outside, have said that he never came out.

Meanwhile, a Saudi delegation arrived in Turkey for talks, officials said on Friday, with the case risking fragile relations between Ankara and Riyadh.

Also, anti-Saudi sentiment in the U.S. Congress could conceivably raise pressure to pass the so-called No Oil Producing and Exporting Cartels Act, which would end sovereign immunity shielding OPEC members from U.S. legal action.
