Saudi Arabia, while not yet being an official North Atlantic Treaty Organisation member, is a prominent USA partner.
It's been nearly a week since a prominent Saudi journalist vanished after entering the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul.
Turkish officials have said they fear the columnist was killed inside the premises.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Monday asked Riyadh to prove its claim that Khashoggi had left the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, while Washington urged Saudi Arabia to support an investigation into his disappearance.
In an op-ed published by the Post late Tuesday, Khashoggi's fiancée wrote that the October 2 visit to the Saudi consulate was Khashoggi's second in the space of a few days.
The Saudis intend to blame elements within their country's deep state, security establishment for the journalist's kidnapping, the source said.
The Turkish president said in a speech to members of his Justice and Development Party that he was following Khashoggi's case himself.
Investigators reportedly believe that Mr Khashoggi's body might have been smuggled out of the consulate in diplomatic vans and then carried onto one of the planes.
Saudi officials meant to lure Khashoggi back to Saudi Arabia, the Washington Post reported the source as saying, but it was unclear what they meant to do with him - and whether the USA ever warned Khashoggi of the threat he faced.

Chuck Grassley’s Handling of the Ford Hearing Is an Ongoing Disaster
Kavanaugh came out with guns blazing, nearly as if he could yell the sexual assault allegations away. Earlier this month, he told Judiciary Committee staffers he didn't recall ever meeting Ford.
Bill Cosby going to prison
Cosby did not make a statement in court. "The victims cannot be unraped, all we can do is hold the perpetrators responsible". Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele rejected the notion that Cosby's age and infirmity entitle him to mercy.
He also questioned assertions by Saudi authorities that the consulate does not have footage of Khashoggi leaving the building as the mission's security cameras only provide live footage and do not record images.
He had been living in the United States in a self-imposed exile since previous year, in part due to the rise of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the son of King Salman.
The Saudi Arabian government has denied the allegations, claiming that they allowed reporters to enter the building to see that Khashoggi was not present.
Social media users shared images of Jack Dorsey and MBS during the latter's visit to NY in 2016, reminding Jack of the current events revolving around the missing Saudi journalist and MBS' involvement in it. He says such a move "would be hurting us". The routes of all the vehicles of the Saudi consulate are being searched extensively and authorities have already reached their conclusion.
"The request that America made to Saudi Arabia and other OPEC countries is to be sure that if there is any loss of supply from Iran, that we will supply that".
"If a bird flew, or a fly or a mosquito appeared, the systems would capture this; they (Saudi Arabia) have the most cutting-edge systems", he was quoted as saying.
The announcement came as the Post published a surveillance image of Jamal Khashoggi walking into the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul, just before he disappeared.
Saudi Arabia's foreign ministry said the country was "open to co-operation" and a search of the building could go ahead as part of the investigation.
A former editor of the al-Watan newspaper and a short-lived Saudi TV news channel, Mr Khashoggi was for years seen as close to the Saudi royal family.
