UN criticized over inclusion of Philippines in rights council

India received 188 votes in the Asia-Pacific category after the UN's 193-member General Assembly voted to elect new members into the top human rights' body.

Teodoro Locsin, Jr., the next foreign affairs secretary, announced that the Philippines won 165 out of 192 votes on Friday in UNHRC, which is "responsible for the promotion and protection of all human rights around the globe".

"It's a reflection of India's position in the comity of nations, it's a testament that world community holds India in high esteem".

He was commenting on widespread criticisms from worldwide human rights groups that assailed the United Nations body's decision as a step back for human rights because of accusations that the Duterte administration was behind extrajudicial killings of drug suspects.

"Elevating states with records of gross human rights violations and abuses is a tremendous setback", said Amnesty International USA's advocacy director, Daniel Balson. Nations required at least 97 votes to get chose to the Council.

From the Asia-Pacific region, five countries were running for the five vacancies.

India will join Pakistan, China and Nepal, which were elected to the Council in previous years.

India got elected again in 2007, 2011, and 2014 to three-year-terms. All the countries mentioned will be a part of the UNHRC from January 1, 2019.

The Palace also thanked UN Human Rights Council and the states that voted for the Philippines for recognizing the Duterte administration's efforts and "brand of human rights advocacy".

India's last tenure had ended on December 31, 2017.

On the basis of equitable geographical distribution, Council seats are allocated to the five regional groups as follows: African States, 13 seats; Asia Pacific States, 13 seats; Eastern European States, 6 seats; Latin American and Caribbean States, 8 seats; and Western European and other States, 7 seats.

The NIHR asserted that Bahrain has seriously and continuously strived to consolidate and protect the principles of human rights in accordance with worldwide conventions, and enhanced its cooperation with all efforts exerted by the global Community to develop the human rights situation. In the nomination pledge, India presented a broader approach to human rights, emphasising on topics such as climate justice, health, and poverty alleviation.
