Police said the boat was "in poor mechanical shape" and was overloaded with passengers on a lake cruise when it capsized.
Uganda Police Force wrote on Social media that "The Uganda Police Force Marine Unit rescues over 40 people alive in Lake Victoria".
"I send condolences to the families of the people who died in the accident on Lake Victoria last evening", he said.
"The boat was overloaded and secondly there was bad weather", Patrick Onyango told Reuters, adding the boat was carrying 84 people, majority revellers.
Lawn games at the Mutima Country Resort, close to the capital Kampala, were pushed aside Sunday to make way for an open-air morgue where police collected the bloated bodies of victims. According to police sources, more than 70 people are still missing.

In 1966, more than 800 people lost their lives on Lake Victoria when the MV Bukoba sank off the mainland town of Mwanza, according to the Red Cross.
