Millions of Americans in the Northeast and Middle Atlantic states will wake up to the coldest Thanksgiving in more than a century, with high winds even threatening the iconic Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, meteorologists said Wednesday. Wind chills in the 20s all day.
According to the National Weather Service, only three Thanksgivings have had high temperatures below 30 degrees. The expected bitter cold Thursday prompted Portland officials to reschedule the 107th annual Thanksgiving Day game between Deering and Portland high schools.
Highs are forecast in the lower 30s, which is close to a record chill for the holiday. Cold air will come along on Saturday.
"While much of the eastern US will be experiencing a very cold air mass associated with an Arctic high-pressure system, this area of low pressure will have the potential to bring flooding rain to portions of Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia", said AccuWeather Meteorologist Brett Rossio, adding those areas could see up to 3 inches of water and possible "strong" thunderstorms.
According to Accuweather senior meteorologist Alex Sosnowski, most of the coldest Thanksgiving's have "occurred during the mid-1800s to near the turn of the 20th century".
The temperatures will then climb into the high 40s and low 50s this weekend - although at the cost of rain showers.
