Girl Scouts CEO Sylvia Acevedo issued a statement Sunday expressing condolences for the victims, who were picking up litter along the road in Lake Hallie when a pickup truck veered of the road and hit them.
Police say the 21-year-old driver accused of striking and killing three Girl Scouts and a mother and injuring a fourth girl had been inhaling chemical vapors before the crash in northwestern Wisconsin.
Three young Girl Scouts and a mother were killed Saturday while cleaning garbage out of a ditch in Lake Hallie, Wisconsin.
The driver, identified as Colton Treu, 21, of Chippewa Falls, fled the scene but later turned himself in, police said.
All members of the group - seven children and five adults - "were in the ditch, not on the pavement or gravel shoulder at the time of the crash" and were "wearing green highly visible safety vests", police said.
Officials say two area Girl Scouts and one adult are dead. He faces four counts of homicide by negligent use of a vehicle and is expected in court Monday morning.
