On Sunday, U.S. border agents fired gas into Mexico to deter hundreds of Central American asylum seekers from drawing closer to the U.S. border.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said the department would "not hesitate to shut down POEs [ports of entry] for security reasons".
Had the group made it to the border and presented themselves as asylum seekers, USA officials would have been required by federal law to consider their claim before sending them back to Mexico.
Trump has repeatedly suggested without evidence that the migrant caravans are full of hardened criminals, but they are mostly poor people with few belongings who are fleeing gang violence.
