That's never been done and experts interviewed by The Post Sunday night knew of no provision explicitly allowing Trump to "close the borders permanently".

Mexico's Interior Ministry said Sunday it would immediately deport those who tried to "violently" enter the USA from Tijuana.

The use of tear gas has drawn rebukes from Democrats in Washington, from immigration activists elsewhere, and from the Honduran government whose citizens are a majority of the illegal immigrants who broke into Mexico and caravanned their way across to reach the US border.

"We work with our partners in Mexico continuously", she said.

Hundreds of people were peacefully protesting near the USA border in Tijuana, chanting that they aren't criminals, when a smaller group broke off and headed toward the border fence.

"But now it seems that they want to kill us, and we got very scared", said Jimenez. "Nobody's coming into our country unless they come in legally".

"A large group rushed the area and they were throwing rocks and bottles at my men and women, putting them in harm's way, as well as other members of the caravan", Provost told Fox News' "Fox and Friends." .

In an early Monday tweet, Trump added, "Mexico should move the flag waving Migrants, many of whom are stone cold criminals, back to their countries".

Mexico to shore up border security, deport migrants who tried to enter U.S.

"Shooting tear gas at children is not who we are as Americans", Tom Perez, chairman of the Democratic National Committee, tweeted.

The San Ysidro Port of Entry, located between Tijuana and San Diego, had to be closed for hours Sunday after the incident. Border Patrol agents deployed tear gas to dispel the group because of the risk to agents' safety.

Mexican officials said the migrants had taken part in "violent" chaos, which originally began as a peaceful march.

Over the weekend, the scene at the border devolved as members of the current migrant caravan attempted to storm the border wall between Tijuana and San Diego, and threw rocks at law enforcement and military officers lining the border.

On Sunday, U.S. border agents fired gas into Mexico to deter hundreds of Central American asylum seekers from drawing closer to the U.S. border.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said the department would "not hesitate to shut down POEs [ports of entry] for security reasons".

Had the group made it to the border and presented themselves as asylum seekers, USA officials would have been required by federal law to consider their claim before sending them back to Mexico.

Trump has repeatedly suggested without evidence that the migrant caravans are full of hardened criminals, but they are mostly poor people with few belongings who are fleeing gang violence.
