The 30-year-old Hayne went to a Sydney police station with his manager on Monday and was later charged over the alleged sexual assault of a 26-year-old woman on september 30, the night of the NRL final between Sydney Roosters and Melbourne Storm.
According to reports, the woman said she had allegedly suffered injuries during a sexual encounter with Hayne in the Hunter Valley on September 30, which was initially consensual.
The 30-year-old arrived at Ryde Police Station in Sydney's northwest at 4pm on Monday where he was arrested by the New South Wales Child Abuse and Sex Crime Squad.
Hayne is also defending a civil case in the United States over a woman's accusations that he raped her during his time as a San Francisco 49ers National Football League player.
Hayne is now without an NRL club after his season ended with the Parramatta Eels.
Hayne was given conditional bail and is due to appear at Burwood Local Court on December 10. Hayne's manager Wayne Beavis and former Parramatta Eels teammates have not spoken to him since news of the allegations first broke on Thursday night.
The Dragons, who were the only club talking to Hayne, are understood to have gone cold on a prospective deal for the former megastar in recent days.

A timeline showing Hayne's rise and fall. Hayne, a two-time Dally M Medallist, is one of the biggest names in the NRL and had a magical run to help the Eels to the 2009 grand final.
The playmaker is known as a prolific pointscorer, with 121 tries in 214 NRL games.
After missing selection for the Rio de Janeiro Olympics, Hayne returned to the NRL with Gold Coast Titans in 2016.
Hayne is still defending the USA rape claims, which he has vehemently denied.
This would mark the second time Hayne has been accused of a sex crime, having been accused back in 2015, when a woman in the US claimed he raped her after she had been drinking and passed out. She claimed the two met online.
John Clune, the prominent USA lawyer representing JV, has said he is keeping watch on the new sexual assault allegations in Australia, and would "be happy" to talk to Australian authorities and the alleged victim. "No further information is available at this time".
