The CDC still recommends you throw out any lettuce you may have recently bought.

This appears to be a particularly nasty outbreak, with the CDC writing that 13 people have been hospitalized in the US, with one developing kidney failure.

The incident raises the question about why it is so hard to trace where E. coli outbreaks come from.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is urging Americans "not to eat" romaine lettuce amid links to an E Coli outbreak.

According to the Public Health Agency of Canada there have been 18 confirmed cases of the bacterial infection since mid-October.

"As soon as I heard on the news yesterday, I threw everything in the trash that had romaine lettuce - salads, romaine itself", said Mike Fisayo, manager of Chicago's South Loop Market.

They say in Canada, exposure to romaine lettuce has been identified as a source of the outbreak, but the cause of contamination has not been identified.

During the last romaine alert in April, Just Salad switched in organic mesclun, organic arugula, shredded kale, baby spinach, red cabbage and iceberg lettuce, he said. Some cases can become severe enough to pose life-threatening conditions, with the elderly, young and those with weakened immune systems particularly vulnerable. No deaths have been reported.

USA authorities reported 32 cases of E. coli, 13 of which involved a person who was hospitalized.

Consumers should also clean their refrigerators if they have any romaine lettuce on handle.

Which begs the question. can you wash E. coli off lettuce? The CDC said that 13 people were hospitalized, including one person who developed a kind of kidney failure. O'Malley says her lettuce is grown without dirt, in a highly sterile environment and that there's no risk.

The team from Western University says its testing kit can show whether a food has been contaminated with E. coli O157 in a matter of hours, rather than the days or weeks it now takes for test results to come back. The CDC announced that the outbreak appeared to be over on June 28. No recall has been issued, which is the same way the Public Health Agency of Canada and US officials handled a similar outbreak involving romaine a year ago.

Which leads us to the E. coli outbreak linked to romaine lettuce.

"Most people with an infection start feeling sick within three to four days after eating or drinking something that contains the bacteria".
