The CDC still recommends you throw out any lettuce you may have recently bought.
This appears to be a particularly nasty outbreak, with the CDC writing that 13 people have been hospitalized in the US, with one developing kidney failure.
The incident raises the question about why it is so hard to trace where E. coli outbreaks come from.
According to the Public Health Agency of Canada there have been 18 confirmed cases of the bacterial infection since mid-October.
"As soon as I heard on the news yesterday, I threw everything in the trash that had romaine lettuce - salads, romaine itself", said Mike Fisayo, manager of Chicago's South Loop Market.
They say in Canada, exposure to romaine lettuce has been identified as a source of the outbreak, but the cause of contamination has not been identified.
