British Prime Minister Theresa May won a crucial vote of confidence in her leadership on Wednesday, with 200 votes cast in favour of her and 117 against out of a total of 317 of her Conservative Party MPs.
But at a closed meeting with Conservative lawmakers before they were due to decide her fate, she announced she would not take the party into the next election due in 2022, two lawmakers present told reporters.
And Work and Pensions Secretary Amber Rudd said: "She was very clear that she won't be taking the general election in 2022". Created to prevent a "hard border" between Northern Ireland-a part of the United Kingdom, therefore out of the European Union post-Brexit-and the Republic of Ireland to its south, which will remain part of the European Union post-Brexit.
Nell concedes the arithmetic to the deal passing through parliament remains challenging, however May's victory, "especially if combined with a protocol providing additional legal assurance on the temporary nature of the Irish backstop, could increase support for the Brexit deal in the vote promised by January 21".
Mrs May has said she is not expecting a breakthrough on the backstop during this week's two-day summit in Brussels.
Theresa May, Britain's embattled prime minister, is pressing on with fraught Brexit negotiations after surviving an attempt to oust her from power Wednesday night.
"This, to me, displays that some European Union leaders at least, are still not convinced that she has the numbers and if she doesn't, that is why they're floating the ideas around Article 50 delay or revocation".
European leaders have said any assurances they deliver can not contradict the accord agreed with the Prime Minister.
A former Bank of England employee and daughter of a Church of England pastor, May has been widely praised for a punishing work ethic and dedication to duty, but her premiership has been characterised by obduracy in the face of crises.
May needed to convince a majority of her party MPs and a minimum of 159 votes to win the contest.

It's on the pitch you have to do your talking and it is the coach who makes the decisions so the best I can do is show my best form.
The traditionally right-wing paper said five ministers were now urging May to let parliament "hold a series of "indicative" votes on every conceivable option" of Brexit.
When the Conservative party held the last convention in Birmingham, there was a lot of talk about the leadership challenge as the division between the hardline Brexiteers and the rest of the Conservative party loyal to the party leader and the Prime Minister Theresa May was obvious.
"It's possible, if the United Kingdom wishes, to revoke Article 50, or if that's a step too far, to seek an extension of Article so that the United Kingdom parliament has more time to come together and decide what they would like the outcome to be", he said.
Mrs May's victory in the confidence vote means that another challenge can not be mounted against her position as Tory leader for a year.
While May's position as party leader - and prime minister, as long as there is no snap election - is safe for another year, her struggle is far from over.
They have been largely unhappy with the Irish backstop proposal.
After the vote he said the result was "terrible" for Mrs May, adding: "She ought to go and see the Queen urgently and resign".
The Labour leader then asked: "Since the prime minister has not achieved any changes either to the withdrawal agreement or the future partnership, can she now confirm that we will have the concluding days of debate and votes within the next seven days, before the house rises for the Christmas recess?"
As it stands, the United Kingdom and the European Union are at a political impasse, and the current Brexit withdrawal agreement will not win approval in Parliament.
Brady told the BBC he had spoken to the prime minister and noted she was "keen that matters be resolved as quickly as is reasonably possible". It's clear that she has not been able to negotiate the necessary changes in Europe. He said: "I think that it is very hard to support the deal if we don't get changes to the backstop".
